United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT)

UN-Habitat, is the United Nations agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. For more than forty years, UN-Habitat has been working in human settlements throughout the world. The efforts of UN-Habitat have been focused on building a better future for developing villages, towns and cities of all sizes, which are most in need to guide, direct urbanization and capitalize on its opportunities.

In 2005, UN-Habitat signed a host agreement with the Government of Jordan and established a country office in Amman to encourage activities in the area of human settlements and support the government of Jordan to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat Jordan operates in accordance with the overall mandate of UN-Habitat and National Development Plans. The country programme is closely aligned with the development priorities of Jordan and focuses on the following action areas: Urban policy and legislation; land and governance; urban planning and design; urban basic services; housing and slum upgrading; risk reduction and rehabilitation; urban research and capacity development and urban economy and municipal finance.

UN-Habitat Jordan works closely with governmental institutions, including the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation; Ministry of Municipal Affairs; Ministry of Public Works and Housing; Ministry of Environment; regional and international organizations, local authorities, civil society organizations and the private sector. The programme helps promote the implementation of UN-Habitat global programs and campaigns, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and the New Urban Agenda (NUA) that aim to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable through achieving goal No. 11of  the SDG’s and promoting the implementation of global programs and the NUA adopted by the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) in Quito, Ecuador, on 20 October. A key part of the programme responsibilities is to provide direct technical support to the Urban Development Unit at the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation; the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDC); and The Amman Urban Observatory to be more active within the regional and global observatories' network, as deemed appropriate in consultation with Greater Amman Municipality.
